L’Rain (Taja Cheek) and DJ Lady Lane (Rena Anakwe), transform BAMcafé into an experimental sound bath, welcoming the audience into the space. Drawing confidently from free-jazz, post-punk, R&B, and anything else that catches her interest, the Crown Heights-born L’Rain follows her heart across all musical genres. Through sound, visuals and scent, interdisciplinary artist DJ Lady Lane explores intersections between traditional healing practices, spirituality and performance. The two will join together to create a sonically-immersive experience, to open the evening. The adventurous spirit continues with Melanie Charles, who trained as an opera singer before turning to jazz. She has since made waves with her voice and versatility, bringing together jazz, soul, experimental, and Haitian roots music. Charles appears at BAMcafé with Jonathan Michel on bass, IGNABU on drums, Lady Lane on visuals and special guest Marc Cary on keys.
